History
Since its founding in 2015, the Catholic Institute of Northeast Asia Peace (CINAP) has been hosting international conferences every year—the First International Conference was held in 2017—to reflect our mission to promote peace in the Korean Peninsula. The fundamental purpose of hosting yearly conferences was to seek possibilities for international solidarity, which is the special nature as well as the main strength of the Catholic Church.
Peace in the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia is strongly related to the United States, Japan, and neighboring great powers. For peace in the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia, CINAP has focused on strengthening the communication channel between the Korean Catholic Church and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Japan (CBCJ), and the Holy See since the preparation of the first CINAP International Conference, believing that all of us--Churches in Korea, the United States, Japan, and the Holy See--must stand in solidarity together.
In this spirit, we invited participants from the Churches in the United States and Japan to our International Conferences and made efforts to widen our reach to Russia and European regions. In the case of China, considering many factors including the improvement of the relationship between China and the Holy See, we still face challenges in hosting the conference together. Although we have not yet succeeded in hosting the event together, we are aiming for friendly exchanges and cooperation between Korean and Chinese Churches. In many ways, CINAP aims to provide an open space for dialogues for international solidarity.
가톨릭동북아평화연구소(2015년 개소)는 2017년 12월 제1회 국제학술대회를 시작으로 매년 한반도 평화를 모색하기 위한 국제학술회의를 개최하고 있습니다. 본 연구소 국제학술대회의 근본 취지는 가톨릭교회가 지닌 보편교회의 특성과 장점, 특히 국제 연대의 가능성을 찾는 데 있습니다.
한반도 평화와 동북아 평화는 미국과 일본을 포함한 주변 강대국과 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있습니다. 이 지역의 평화를 위해 한국 교회가 미국 교회와 일본 교회와 바티칸과 함께 연대해야 한다는 문제 의식에서 시작한 본 연구소는 제1회 국제학술대회를 준비하는 과정에서부터 미국 주교회의와 일본 주교회의, 바티칸과 소통하는 통로를 마련하는데 역점을 두었습니다.
매년 국제학술대회에 미국 주교회의와 일본 주교회의 관계자를 초청하였고, 러시아와 유럽까지 연대의 손길을 내밀고 있는 중입니다. 중국의 경우, 바티칸과 중국 교회의 상황 등을 고려해 공동 학술대회를 개최하는 데 어려움이 많아 아직까지 함께하지는 못했으나, 여전히 양국 교회의 친교와 협력을 위해 노력 중입니다. 이렇듯 가톨릭동북아평화연구소는 국제 연대를 위해 다방면으로 대화의 장을 마련하고 있습니다.
